Home2Rome 2010 was always going to be a special event. It was the event that was getting the most signups for the 2010 season, had a large number of veterans (good fun element assured), and for some reason had its own energy.

There are some events that are destined to go down as classic events to be on, and this was most certainly one of them.

The start line in Calais was a phenomenal line of detritus. You can always see the quality of a group from the effort that's been put into the cars, and these cars looked good in a bad way (or is that bad in a good way?). Couple of quality mentions were the two Rover 800 limos that appeared on the start line. Not sure we've ever had one in 20+ Euro events, and we get two on the same event fielded by two teams who were strangers.

Other notable start line appearances were the Reliant Robin (2nd Robin on a StreetSafari event), a Citreon Visa (that was stacking bonus points for age (B reg), body modifications (more Superbird than boy racer spoiler), 1.2 engine, permanent orange paintwork, and so forth. The vehicle was fielded by a father and daughter team. It's not often that you can call a father/daughter team hard core banger ralliers, but by the end they had earned their rusty banger rally stripes.

We also had a General Lee on the start line with an excellent paint job. They even cheated by painting it indoors! They were forgiven the rather excellent paint job for having their very own Daisy Duke. And all this on a £150 Lexus 400. Now, the Lexus was probably worth more than £150 when they got it, but I doubt the paint job did much to help its future valuation.

Speyside Stig had their own homage to Stig on a diesel Golf, with Citreon badging. This team were trying to get Citreon bonus points on a VW – nice try – but not going to work ;)

Team Malex were sporting lots of foglights. Eight in total, and it has to be said that lots of foglights are still in vogue. The Mondeo was also sporting a tasteful matt black finish for the 19th year running. We are fulling expecting Team Malex to be back with another Mondeo in matt black next year. Let's hope this particular car doesn't meet the fate of one of its predecessors with a talent wipe out on Stelvio. Team Malex were also not sporting girlfriends this year. Taking your other half on a banger is a make or break thing, lets hope it wasn't the latter.

At StreetSafari HQ we think Team Malex should sport a pink car next year. They've been too stylish too many years now. We'll even accept the Porsche Pink Pig rather than plain gay pink.

Desperados were fielding a very nice G plated MX5. It's at this point that we WISH we had an organiser's £150 claim rule as we would have had that MX5 and nursed it back to England regardless.

Nik Plant was sporting a very nicely turned out Escort Estate in Martini colours. Very similar to our Kia gayPride that was murdered, but far nicer graphics than ours. But the gayPride did have tinted windows.

A worthy mention to Alpha Signal Three with the 555 themed Audi 80 that definitely sounded more menacing than the 4 cylinder engine it was sporting.

The start went perfectly in Calais and nearly all the teams got off to a good pace.

It only took 50 miles for Nik Plant's team to realise that their Euros had been accidentally put in the bin at the hotel that morning. Fifteen miles to the next exit, and 65 miles back to the hotel and they found their money in the bin in the still uncleaned hotel room – now that was a close call.

The first stop of the day was at the historic Reims grand prix track. The track is now a public road, and the old buildings have been left to rot and left without purpose. I'm not sure what the score is but we have been led to believe that certain groups are battling over its future – some like the abandoned look and some groups want the buildings properly restored and brought back to life.

I have to admit that we would be in the latter group, these buildings may be historic but it doesn't mean they should deserve to be left to rot and unattended.

Reims was a 200 mile jaunt which everyone had to complete in fairly short order. Day 1 is a long day and we need everyone at Reims for a car group photo, and then a quick off again to do the other 400+ miles.

No one had to break speed limits that morning, but several of the cars were definitely having cooling issues after that first 200 mile run. We do forget that some of these cars are past their best.

The teams lined up outside the old race track buildings in a herring bone pattern, given their first challenge, and off they all went. Cooling problems and all.

There were a few breakdowns during the day, not least the Isuzu Trooper that was supporting the Reliant Robin. That would be a recurring story and even by the end of the first day it hadn't gone unnoticed that the Reliant was supporting the Trooper.

The main issue was cooling, which was kinda worrying as motorways are generally kind to cooling, whereas mountains aren't, and we haven't got to the mountains yet!
